Having earned her place on the graphic design and printing scene, Kim Sandford, founder of Illustrated Identity, took the bold decision to go it alone and set up her own company in 2016. Coming from a hugely successful role at another company in the industry, Kim spotted the opportunity to start a business and put her own stamp on her work.
Illustrated Identity is a creative clothing store based in Middlesbrough, specialising in personalised clothing and design for print. Although the business calls Teesside it’s home, it has its eyes firmly fixed on expansion. With ambitious goals to grow the company and establish another base in America, Illustrated Identity is already showing it’s potential with an ever-expanding order book ready for shipment to the USA where the company is gaining a loyal following of customers.
The rate at which the company has grown is a testament to the tenacity of Kim and her team. Such success can come with it’s own challenges though as Kim explains “my business has expanded at such a fast pace since setting up I had never really taken a step back to see other methods of selling, or considered the potential risks my business could encounter in the future without strategies and goals for both the business and the team individually.”
Based in Tees Valley, Kim has benefited from SSW Skills Support for Workers funded training managed by Calderdale College and delivered by Enterprise Made Simple. Following on from an initial meeting with a business advisor at Enterprise Made Simple to understand the support available and how it could help her business,
Kim describes the training as having helped her to increase sales by an astounding 131% on last year.
Since attending the training, Kim is actively implementing strategies to manage her time more effectively, assessing the changes regularly as a team and supporting the team through everyday changes with personal development plans. “I couldn’t recommend this course enough or the team curating it” adds Kim.
If what Illustrated Identity has achieved so far is anything to go by then the future plans to build a talented team of creatives on both sides of the Atlantic might just happen sooner than Kim thinks, ensuring the business works proudly towards putting Teesside on an international stage.
